Kathy will be speaking about forensic anthropology at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ Distinguished Speakers Series tonight at 7PM at the Miniaci Performing Arts Center. More details can be found here.
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences will welcome forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, Ph.D., to Nova Southeastern University as part of the college’s 2012–2013 Distinguished Speakers Series.
From teaching FBI agents how to detect and recover human remains, to separating and identifying commingled body parts in her Montreal lab, Reichs has used her work experience to inform her popular, forensic fictional thrillers.
Her first novel, Déjà Dead, became a New York Times bestseller and won the 1997 Ellis Award for Best First Novel. In 2010, Reichs launched the Virals series of young adult novels. She is also a producer of the television series Bones, which is based on her work and her books.
For years, Reichs consulted for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in North Carolina, and she continues to do so for the Laboratoire de Sciences Judiciaires et de Médecine Légale for the province of Québec. She has traveled to Rwanda to testify at the UN Tribunal on Genocide and helped exhume a mass grave in Guatemala. As part of her work at JPAC (formerly CILHI), she aided in the identification of the dead from World War II, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
Reichs is one of only 88 forensic anthropologists ever certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. She served on the Board of Directors and as vice president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and she is currently a member of the National Police Services Advisory Council in Canada. She is a professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Reichs earned a Ph.D. at Northwestern University and holds an honorary LLD from Concordia University in Montreal.
As part of the college mission to prepare students for rich professional careers and active citizenship, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences frames co-curricular programs and experiences around a broad annual theme that unites our community in interdisciplinary exploration. The academic theme for the 2012–2013 school year is “Life and Death.” Reichs will speak on this theme.
