Ten of the world’s best crime writers are competing to have a state-of-the-art morgue named after them – and you can vote for me! The morgue is going to be a centre for scientific research and training, helping the next generation of scientists, doctors and dentists to become better at saving lives and at developing cures for a huge range of illnesses. The morgue will also be instrumental for Prof Sue Black’s work with the police in the UK; in smashing paedophile networks, in understanding how crimes were committed, as well as her endeavours overseas – she’s travelled the world, helping identify bodies that are decomposed, burned, mutilated or otherwise unrecognisable, including the victims of natural disasters, such as the 2004 tsunami. Sue’s highest profile project was identifying the bodies of Slobodan Milosevic’s victims in mass graves in the Balkans – both for public record, and for burial. The new morgue will help Sue and her team be at the forefront of new technology as well as being the training ground for a new generation, people who can carry on Sue’s work across the globe.

I wanted to point out a lovely quote from Emily Deschanel. She said, “I love a good mystery and have been fascinated by forensic science long before starting work on the show Bones, so I am a big fan of Kathy’s books. I love the character of Temperance Brennan, her strong spirit and intelligence, and the humor in the book series.”

As I said in the interview, it’s important to have humor because the books are very character-based. Emily has done a fantastic job bringing that character to life on the show.

The Million for a Morgue campaign is well underway. The project aims to raises funds for a state of the art facility at the University of Dundee to support advances in medical and anthropological techniques. As part of the project, I have joined with 9 other crime writers to help raises funds for the center. The public are able to vote for their favorite author on the University of Dundee’s website and the author who raises the most money will have the privilege of having the new morgue named after them.

I have no doubt that future discoveries and procedures developed at the center will support bringing more criminals to justice and will greatly advance the field of forensic anthropology for the entire world.
